“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
Those were the words of John Dewey, an acclaimed American educational reformer and champion of social justice. In short, this quote tells us that education has no endpoint in life. Living is learning. It’s a journey we all share in some way from our first to last day in this world.
Age is irrelevant, it’s just a number that carries no weight.
This sums up our mindset at HeyArt. We’re not just any online course provider, we’re one that is committed to change. The goal is simple, it’s to help senior citizens around the world. We aim to uplift their mental health, help them lead happier lives, and stay connected through a one-of-a-kind art and craft learning experience.
The way we see it, the elderly are a precious part of society. Now more than ever. They deserve empowerment and a right to education. To better understand where we’re coming from, we need to discuss the source of inspiration behind HeyArt – Japan.
Japan, the source of our inspiration
Japan has the world’s oldest population. 28.2% of its 126.8 million citizens are aged 65 or above as of August 2022. That’s 35.58 million elderly people to be exact. This country has introduced an effective social care system to help an aging society. In our opinion, it has become a model for other countries to emulate.
What inspires us most is how Japan has tackled lifelong learning. Rather than continue the traditional standards, the government campaigned for change. It proposed for education to be available for all age groups. This led to the establishment of the Lifelong Learning Promotion Law in 1990 and the founding of the various learning councils across the East Asian nation.
Today, on top of the various public courses available, several Japanese universities and private institutions have joined this movement.
The number of participants in social education reached a record high in 2008 of 34,172,338. It meant almost a third of the entire population in Japan had taken part in some kind of course.
As a result, the well-being of older people has improved. The many activities have kept them engaged in the community – not to mention physically active! – and a part of wider social issues. This change, therefore, has paved the way for a happier and healthier aging population – the very thing we at HeyArt work toward every day.
How HeyArt is doing its part
Our mission at HeyArt is to empower the elderly around the world. We seek to uplift their mental health, build confidence and connect them with each other on a safe and remote learning platform.
Inspired by the Japanese, we have created an online educational platform for art and craft: https://heyartcourses.com You can access it to learn new skills right from the comfort of your own home. The best part is you do it at any time, interact with your fellow students, and earn a professional diploma at the end.
The type of courses available on HeyArt include:
- Drawing
- Wood Crafting
- Sewing
- History
- And many more
Lifelong learning keeps us active, healthy, and fit during our lives. There are no two ways around it. Retirement even offers older people a chance to discover and develop new skills. Combined, these two factors can empower them in a world that is evolving at an almost never-ending rate.
The many art and craft courses on our platform aim to facilitate education in this respect. They also target to improve your mental health and wellbeing as a creative outlet, improve your physical health, and build connections with other students.
Best of all, you get to make something with your very own hand and show it off!
